Chairman’s Blog: A Case of the Gimmies

The Left has always defined success by how many people the government can help. As Thomas Sowell perfectly noted recently, "the big word on the left is 'compassion,' the big agenda on the left is dependency. The more people who are dependent on government handouts, the more votes the left can depend on for an ever-expanding welfare state."

I saw this first hand last week when I took part in an Obamacare Forum at Cameron University with my counterpart Democrat Chair Wallace Collins.

Collins, along with Senator Johnson, focused their remarks on (what else) the "gimmies" in Obamacare. They raved about how the big bad insurance companies couldn't turn anyone away who had a preexisting condition and glowed about how young adults could stay on their parents’ plans until they were 26. Obama knew what he was doing when he put the gimmies up front in Obamacare. There's no doubt about it: this country has a bad case of the gimmies.

We forget that when we are decrying the 46.7 million people on food stamps that those who are dependent on government are actually more likely to vote for politicians who are giving them those handouts. Remember FDR? He was reelected with unemployment in double digits, 20 percent at times, but he knew how to hand out those gimmies!

More from our Republican Yoda (Sowell): "Dependency pays off in votes — unless somebody alerts the taxpayers who get stuck with the bill."

Conservatives understand that gimmies aren't really gimmies, someone is picking up the bill, and that someone is the taxpayer. Republicans have to alert the taxpayer because Democrats clearly won't. ODP Chairman Collins and Senator Johnson were not going to tell the taxpayers at our public Forum last week that Obamacare's price tag was $2.6 trillion, has $810 billion worth of taxes, and it adds over $700 billion to the national deficit.

Don't look over your shoulder for someone else to step up, we don't have that kind of time. It's up to you to alert the taxpayer. That's why I drove three hours to Lawton to participate in the Obamacare Forum. It was my responsibility that day to alert the taxpayer. We have 50 days left to alert as many more taxpayers as possible, because our country simply can't take this case of the gimmies much longer.
