Quote of the Week
"Too many Americans now believe that the checks they receive every month from the unemployment office -- like the checks they get from the welfare office, from Medicare, from Social Security -- are inalienable rights. They are not."
--columnist Ben Shapiro

"One of the biggest reasons for higher medical costs is that somebody else is paying those costs, whether an insurance company or the government. What is the politicians' answer? To have more costs paid by insurance companies and the government. ... [H]aving someone else pay for medical care virtually guarantees that a lot more of it will be used. Nothing would lower costs more than having each patient pay those costs. And nothing is less likely to happen."

--economist Thomas Sowell

Read of the Week
George Will discusses the Supreme Court's rulings on gun control laws and the Second Amendment in today's feature. In 2008, the Supreme Court struck down a District of Columbia law that banned handgun possession, even in the gun owner's home. The Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protected individuals' rights to gun ownership; essentially the 2008 ruling reaffirmed that the Second Amendment "codified a pre-existing right." Message from Gary Jones

Ever wonder just actually what the Oklahoma Republican Party does?

Here is what we do:

-Recruit and train candidates and their campaign staffs

-Financially support our Republican candidates

-Conduct training for County Republican officers and volunteers throughout the State of Oklahoma

-Hold voter registration drives to register new Republican voters

-Develop and maintain a volunteer and voter database

-Plan and coordinate Party fundraising events and activities

-Provide year-round stability with permanent headquarters and staff in Oklahoma City and Tulsa

-Serve as a voice for the Oklahoma Republican Party with media and press relations operations in print, radio and T.V.

-Plan and coordinate the strategy and implementation of the Get-Out-The –Vote Campaign that helps elect Oklahoma Republicans

These are just some of the things that the Oklahoma GOP does to help make this a better state.

In addition, The Oklahoma Republican Party receives very little financial support from those national organizations outside of state.

In fact, while Oklahoma Democrats have received a large percentage of their funding from the national Democrat Party, the Oklahoma GOP has been self-sufficient, raising over 98% of our funding right here in our state. And the Oklahoma GOP spent those funds in the most cost- effective, efficient manner of any state party in America. Our election results speak for themselves.

All that said, we are asking you to contribute now to the Oklahoma Republican Party. Like you, we are receiving mail requests for contributions to help in the upcoming elections. No contribution you can make will help to elect GOP candidates in November 2010 more than a generous contribution to the Oklahoma Republican Party.
Please send your check today!

Legislation on the Hill
On Thursday, the House passed a $35 billion "jobs" bill by a 217-201 vote. It combined the Senate's $15 billion bill (passed last week) with $20 billion in federal highway programs, and Democrats reluctantly amended the measure to conform to pay-as-you-go budget rules. The U.S. economy shed another 36,000 jobs in February with headline unemployment holding steady at 9.7 percent. But no worries -- federal government payroll increased by 7,000 jobs.
Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN) and Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) have proposed a constitutional amendment that would limit spending by the federal government. "With our nation facing a fiscal crisis, it is time to fundamentally change the way Washington spends the taxpayers' money," Pence said. The amendment would limit spending to one-fifth of U.S. economic output -- the post-World War II average -- unless two-thirds of each chamber of Congress determines otherwise, or waive the provision under a declaration of war.
Last Thursday, the Patriot Act was reauthorized, even though Democrats opposed it in 2001. The primary sections of the Act, court-approved wiretaps on suspect's multiple phones, court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations; and surveillance conducted against a "lone wolf," non-US citizens whose association with terrorist groups has not been clearly established. New House restrictions on the Patriot Act include: "exploiting the phobias of the individual," stress positions, deprivation of food, water, or sleep, the use of military dogs to intimidate (but not attack) suspects, or exposure to extreme cold or cramped confinement.

Energizing the Grassroots
Politico's Alex Isenstadt writes that while the tea party movement has energized the grassroots, candidates have not been able to translate the momentum into votes. However, the overall movement is helping the GOP. “They are the energy force for Republicans right now,” said Tom Davis, a former Virginia congressman and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. “They are the people that will help drive turnout, and they have a message that will resonate with voters who have been disenfranchised over the last few cycles.” Click here to read the complete article.
